ABSTRACT

Vulcanization is a chemical modification of rubber that requires a considerable amount of thermal energy. To save thermal energy, the kinetics of rubber vulcanization should be improved. In this article, the curing properties of rubber vulcanization are thoroughly investigated using the moving die rheometer (MDR) technique. To enhance the kinetics in different stages of ZnO-based sulfur vulcanization systems, small amounts of MgO were added. The results revealed that the small amount of 1 to 2 phr (per hundred grams of rubber) of MgO in the controlled 5 phr ZnO-based curing systems can significantly improve the curing kinetics. For example, the optimum curing time of 1 phr MgO added to the 5 phr ZnO-containing semi-efficient vulcanization system at different temperatures was more than half that of the controlled 5 phr ZnO-only compound. While maintaining a similar rate of vulcanization, the vulcanization temperature can be reduced by up to 20 °C by using MgO as a co-cure activator, which exhibits similar or better rheometric mechanical properties compared to the controlled compounds. With the addition of MgO as a co-cure activator, the vulcanization reactions become very fast, enabling vulcanization to be completed, even at the boiling point of water (100 °C) with an affordable curing time (<1 h). By reducing the vulcanization temperature, the scorch safety time can be enhanced in the ZnO/MgO-based binary cure activator-containing vulcanizates. Overall, MgO could be a potential candidate as a co-cure activator with ZnO for the vulcanization of rubber, offering better economical and eco-friendly methods.

ABSTRACT

The huge demand for natural fibers necessitates the search for non-traditional bioresources including invasive species which are deteriorating the ecosystem and biodiversity. The study aims to utilize Pueraria montana weed for the extraction of lignocellulosic fiber using both traditional (water retting) and chemical extraction methods to determine the better extraction method. Chemically extracted fiber showed 17.09 g/tex bundle strength whereas water-extracted fiber showed 11.7 g/tex bundle strength. Therefore, chemical extraction method was chosen for fiber isolation by optimization of reaction conditions using Box Behnken Design. Based on the design, optimal conditions obtained were 1 % w/v NaOH, 0.75 % v/v H2O2, and 3 days retting time. Solid-state NMR illustrated the breakdown of hemicellulose linkages at 25.89 ppm. FTIR revealed the disappearance of CO groups of hemicellulose at 1742 cm-1. TGA demonstrated thermal stability of chemically treated fiber up to 220 °C and activation energy of 60.122 KJ/mol. XRD evidenced that chemically extracted fiber has a crystallinity index of 71.1 % and a crystal size of 2 nm. Thus P. montana weed holds potential for the isolation of natural fiber as its chemical composition and properties are comparable to commercial lignocellulosic fibers. The study exemplifies the transformation of weed to a bioresource of natural fibers.

ABSTRACT

Noncontact alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) is crucial for large-area and ultrahigh definition (UHD) display manufacturing. This research presents an innovative approach to the photoalignment of LCs, aiming to overcome challenges associated with uniformity and assembly in large-sized and UHD displays. Using homogeneously dissolved, nonionic azobenzene chromophores sensitive to both visible and UV light, we demonstrate an in situ stepwise progression of dye-induced LC alignment and subsequent stabilization using reactive mesogen (RM). Both dual-wavelength and single-wavelength approaches enable stepwise interfacial modifications for LC alignment and stabilization. The dye-induced LC alignment is rewritable, allowing for the creation of various patterns and gray-level alignments. The stability of the alignment is ensured through cross-linked RM layers, providing a robust and permanent solution for LC alignment without the need for delicate mechanical treatments. Importantly, this method addresses the challenges associated with conventional photoalignments, including various dye-induced approaches and high-energy photoalignment. The proposed method exhibits high-quality electro-optical switching, azimuthal anchoring strength, and stability against thermal, radiation, and ac-field stresses, making it a promising candidate for commercial mass production, especially in the fabrication of large-sized and UHD LC displays.

BACKGROUND: Cardioneuroablation has been emerging as a potential treatment alternative in appropriately selected patients with cardioinhibitory vasovagal syncope (VVS) and functional AV block (AVB). However the majority of available evidence has been derived from retrospective cohort studies performed by experienced operators. METHODS: The Cardioneuroablation for the Management of Patients with Recurrent Vasovagal Syncope and Symptomatic Bradyarrhythmias (CNA-FWRD) Registry is a multicenter prospective registry with cross-over design evaluating acute and long-term outcomes of VVS and AVB patients treated by conservative therapy and CNA. RESULTS: The study is a prospective observational registry with cross-over design for analysis of outcomes between a control group (i.e., behavioral and medical therapy only) and intervention group (Cardioneuroablation). Primary and secondary outcomes will only be assessed after enrollment in the registry. The follow-up period will be 3 years after enrollment. CONCLUSIONS: There remains a lack of prospective multicentered data for long-term outcomes comparing conservative therapy to radiofrequency CNA procedures particularly for key outcomes including recurrence of syncope, AV block, durable impact of disruption of the autonomic nervous system, and long-term complications after CNA. The CNA-FWRD registry has the potential to help fill this information gap.

Pulp-paper mills (PPMs) are known for consistently generating a wide variety of pollutants, that are often unidentified and highly resistant to environmental degradation. The current study aims to investigate the changes in the indigenous bacterial communities profile grown in the sediment co-contaminated with organic and inorganic pollutants discharged from the PPMs. The two sediment samples, designated PPS-1 and PPS-2, were collected from two different sites. Physico-chemical characterization of PPS-1 and PPS-2 revealed the presence of heavy metals (mg kg-1) like Cu (0.009-0.01), Ni (0.005-0.002), Mn (0.078-0.056), Cr (0.015-0.009), Pb (0.008-0.006), Zn (0.225-0.086), Fe (2.124-0.764), Al (3.477-22.277), and Ti (99.792-45.012) along with high content of chlorophenol, and lignin. The comparative analysis of organic pollutants in sediment samples using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed the presence of major highly refractory compounds, such as stigmasterol, ß-sitosterol, hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid; 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol; heptacosane; dimethyl phthalate; hexachlorobenzene; 1-decanol,2-hexyl; furane 2,5-dimethyl, etc in sediment samples which are reported as a potential toxic compounds. Simultaneously, high-throughput sequencing targeting the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA genes, resulted in the identification of 1,249 and 1,345 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) derived from a total of 115,665 and 119,386 sequences read, in PPS-1 and PPS-2, respectively. Analysis of rarefaction curves indicated a diversity in OTU abundance between PPS-1 (1,249 OTUs) and PPS-2 (1,345 OTUs). Furthermore, taxonomic assignment of metagenomics sequence data showed that Proteobacteria (55.40%; 56.30%), Bacteoidetes (11.30%; 12.20%), and Planctomycetes (5.40%; 4.70%) were the most abundant phyla; Alphproteobacteria (20.50%; 23.50%), Betaproteobacteria (16.00%; 12.30%), and Gammaproteobacteria were the most recorded classes in PPS-1 and PPS-2, respectively. At the genus level, Thiobacillus (7.60%; 4.50%) was the most abundant genera grown in sediment samples. The results indicate significant differences in both the diversity and relative abundance of taxa in the bacterial communities associated with PPS-2 when compared to PPS-1. This study unveils key insights into contaminant characteristics and shifts in bacterial communities within contaminated environments. It highlights the potential for developing efficient bioremediation techniques to restore ecological balance in pulp-paper mill waste-polluted areas, stressing the importance of identifying a significant percentage of unclassified genera and species to explore novel genes.

The hydrothermal method has been utilized to synthesize graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) polymers and cobalt oxide composites effectively. The weight percentage of g-C3N4 nanoparticles influenced the electrochemical performance of the Co3O4-g-C3N4 composite. In an aqueous electrolyte, the Co3O4-g-C3N4 composite electrode, produced with 150 mg of g-C3N4 nanoparticles, revealed remarkable electrochemical performance. With an increase in the weight percentage of g-C3N4 nanoparticles, the capacitive contribution of the Co3O4-g-C3N4 composite electrode increased. The Co3O4-g-C3N4-150 mg composite electrode shows a specific capacitance of 198 F/g. The optimized electrode, activated carbon, and polyvinyl alcohol gel with potassium hydroxide were used to develop an asymmetric supercapacitor. At a current density of 5 mA/cm2, the asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrated exceptional energy storage capacity with remarkable energy density and power density. The device retained great capacity over 6k galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) cycles, with no rise in series resistance following cyclic stability. The columbic efficiency of the asymmetric supercapacitor was likewise high.

Antibiotic pollution poses a potential risk of genotoxicity, as antibiotics released into the environment can induce DNA damage and mutagenesis in various organisms. This pollution, stemming from pharmaceutical manufacturing, agriculture, and improper disposal, can disrupt aquatic ecosystems and potentially impact human health through the consumption of contaminated water and food. The removal of genotoxic antibiotics using algae-mediated approaches has gained considerable attention due to its potential for mitigating the environmental and health risks associated with these compounds. The paper provides an in-depth examination of the molecular aspects concerning algae and bioreactor-driven methodologies utilized for the elimination of deleterious antibiotics. The molecular analysis encompasses diverse facets, encompassing the discernment and profiling of algae species proficient in antibiotic degradation, the explication of enzymatic degradation pathways, and the refinement of bioreactor configurations to augment removal efficacy. Emphasizing the significance of investigating algal approaches for mitigating antibiotic pollution, this paper underscores their potential as a sustainable solution, safeguarding both the environment and human health.

ABSTRACT

Background The deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap is a workhorse flap for breast reconstruction. Its use for head and neck (HN) reconstruction is rare. Abdomen provides a donor site abundant in skin and subcutaneous tissue, amenable to primary closure; sizeable, robust, and consistent perforators and a long, sizeable pedicle for comfortable microvascular anastomosis. Its offers all the donor variables needed for HN reconstruction in abundance. Methods It is a quasiexperimental design study. DIEP flap use for HN reconstruction in our series was opportunistic, that is, when donor site matched the defect. Cases that had very thick thighs and lesser bulk in abdomen and cases that had very thin thighs but much more bulk in abdomen were considered for reconstruction using DIEP flap. Results The DIEP flap was done in 11 cases for HN reconstruction. There were two re-explorations during postoperative period: one flap loss and another had partial necrosis. Conclusion Abdomen is an excellent donor site option for HN reconstruction in selected cases, especially when harvested as a perforator flap.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to compare the healing potential of bubaline small intestinal matrix (bSIM) and fish swim bladder matrix (FSBM) on full-thickness skin wounds in rabbits. METHOD: Four full-thickness skin wounds (each 20×20mm) were created on the dorsum of 18 rabbits that were divided into three groups based on treatment: untreated sham control (I), implanted with double layers of bSIM (II) and implanted with double layers of FSBM (III). Macroscopic, immunologic and histologic observations were made to evaluate wound healing. RESULTS: Gross healing progression in the bSIM and FSBM groups showed significantly (p<0.05) less wound contraction compared with the sham group. The IgG concentration in rabbit sera was significantly (p<0.05) lower in the FSBM group compared with the bSIM group by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The stimulation index of peripheral blood lymphocytes was significantly (p<0.05) lower in the FSBM group compared with the bSIM group by the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. Implantation of FSBM resulted in improved re-epithelialisation, neovascularisation and fibroplasia. CONCLUSION: The FSBM is a more effective dermal substitute when compared with the bSIM for full-thickness skin wound repair in rabbit.

By 2050, the global population is projected to exceed 9.5 billion, posing a formidable challenge to ensure food security worldwide. To address this pressing issue, mutation breeding in horticultural crops, utilizing physical or chemical methods, has emerged as a promising biotechnological strategy. However, the efficacy of these mutagens can be influenced by various factors, including biological and environmental variables, as well as targeted plant materials. This review highlights the global challenges related to food security and explores the potential of mutation breeding as an indispensable biotechnological tool in overcoming food insecurity. This review also covers the emergence of CRISPR-Cas9, a breakthrough technology offering precise genome editing for the development of high-yield, stress-tolerant crops. Together, mutation breeding and CRISPR can potentially address future food demands. This review focuses into these biotechnological advancements, emphasizing their combined potential to fortify global food security in the face of a booming population.

ABSTRACT

Anticoagulation is the mainstay of stroke prevention in appropriate patients with atrial fibrillation. Due to advances in pharmacotherapy the anticoagulants used for this purpose have evolved significantly over the past decades with the aim of optimizing effectiveness while minimizing bleeding risks. Though significant improvements have been made toward this goal, bleeding risk remains the major concern with these therapies. An investigational class of agents which inhibit Factor XI have shown promise in pre-clinical and early clinical trials to significantly minimize bleeding while maintaining efficacy against stroke and systemic embolism. This mini-review will discuss anticoagulants currently used for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation including warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants. We will also review the mechanism of action and data from early clinical trials for Factor XI inhibitors and discuss their potential advantages and shortcomings.

ABSTRACT

"Gel-type" soft and stretchable magneto-mechanical composites made of silicone rubber and iron particles are in focus because of their high magnetic sensitivity, and intelligence perspective. The "intelligence" mentioned here is related to the "smartness" of these magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) to tune the "mechanical stiffness" and "output voltage" in energy-harvesting applications by switching magnetic fields. Hence, this work develops "gel-type" soft composites based on rubber reinforced with iron particles in a hybrid with piezoelectric fillers such as barium titanate. A further aspect of the work relies on studying the mechanical stability of intelligence and the stretchability of the composites. For example, the stretchability was 105% (control), and higher for 158% (60 per 100 parts of rubber (phr) of barium titanate, BaTiO3), 149% (60 phr of electrolyte iron particles, EIP), and 148% (60 phr of BaTiO3 + EIP hybrid). Then, the magneto-mechanical aspect will be investigated to explore the magnetic sensitivity of these "gel-type" soft composites with a change in mechanical stiffness under a magnetic field. For example, the anisotropic effect was 14.3% (60 phr of EIP), and 4.4% (60 phr of hybrid). Finally, energy harvesting was performed. For example, the isotropic samples exhibit ~20 mV (60 phr of BaTiO3), ~5.4 mV (60 phr of EIP), and ~3.7 mV (60 phr of hybrid). However, the anisotropic samples exhibit ~5.6 mV (60 phr of EIP), and ~8.8 mV (60 phr of hybrid). In the end, the composites prepared have three configurations, namely one with electro-mechanical aspects, another with magnetic sensitivity, and a third with both features. Overall, the experimental outcomes will make fabricated composites useful for different intelligent and stretchable applications.

ABSTRACT

The pulp-paper industry is one of the main industrial sectors that produce massive amounts of residual sludge, constituting an enormous environmental burden for the industries. Traditional sludge management practices, such as landfilling and incineration, are restricted due to mounting environmental pressures, complex regulatory frameworks, land availability, high costs, and public opinion. Valorization of pulp-paper industry sludge (PPS) to produce high-value products is a promising substitute for traditional sludge management practices, promoting their reuse and recycling. Valorization of PPIS for biorefinery beneficiation includes biomethane, biohydrogen, bioethanol, biobutanol, and biodiesel production for renewable energy generation. Additionally, the various thermo-chemical technologies can be utilized to synthesize bio-oil, hydrochar, biochar, adsorbent, and activated carbon, signifying potential for value-added generation. Moreover, PPIS can be recycled as a byproduct by incorporating it into nanocomposites, cardboard, and construction materials development. This paper aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of PPIS management approaches and thermo-chemical technologies utilized for the development of platform chemicals in industry. Substitute uses of PPIS, such as making building materials, developing supercapacitors, and making cardboard, are also discussed. In addition, this article deeply discusses recent developments in biotechnologies for valorizing PPIS to yield an array of valuable products, such as biofuels, lactic acids, cellulose, nanocellulose, and so on. This review serves as a roadmap for future research endeavors in the effective handling of PPIS.

Background We describe our experience with use of free thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap for head and neck (H&N) cancer reconstruction, with respect to the patient and disease profile, suitable defect characteristics, the reconstructive technique, and complications. Methods Consecutive patients ( N = 26) undergoing free TDAP flap for H&N onco-reconstruction, in a single center, were included from January 2015 to December 2018 and the data were analyzed. Results Perforator(s) were reliably predicted preoperatively, using handheld Doppler. Lateral position was comfortable for the harvest. Twenty flaps were harvested on a single perforator, more commonly musculocutaneous ( n = 16). The thoracodorsal nerve and latissimus dorsi muscle could be preserved, completely in almost all cases. The skin paddle was horizontally ( n = 5) or vertically ( n = 21) oriented, both giving a satisfactory scar. The flap was used as a single island or two islands by de-epithelializing intervening skin. Pedicle length was sufficient in all cases. Four cases were explored for suspected venous insufficiency. Two had thrombosis, of which one was salvaged, while the other necrosed. One flap had minimal partial necrosis, which was managed with secondary suturing. The 5-year follow-up showed good oral competence, mouth opening, and cosmetic satisfaction among patients. Conclusion TDAP flap provides all the advantages of a perforator-based free flap and of back as a donor site with close color match to the face, relatively hairless, and thickness in between the thigh and the forearm. It can be a useful tool to provide an ideal functional and aesthetic outcome, with a hidden donor site and minimal donor site morbidity in selected cases.

ABSTRACT

Cavernous hemangioma of orbit is a benign, noninfiltrative, slowly progressive vascular neoplasm. It is usually asymptomatic but patients may present with proptosis and diminished vision due to compression of second cranial nerve, optic nerve. This can be usually diagnosed with the help of clinical examination and computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Small sized tumours are worth wait and watch while large ones need surgical excision. In our case report, A 65-year-old male patient presented to the head and neck surgery with proptosis of left eye since 5 years along with decreased vision since 4 years. MDCT scan (orbits plain) suggestive of large solid retroocular, intraconal mass in left orbit leading to proptosis of left eyeball. The patient underwent excision of tumour through a transnasal endoscopic approach. Histopathological examination of the tumour identified as cavernous hemangioma. It is safe and effective way to access and excise the orbital tumours through the transnasal endoscopic approach. It is essential to have experienced surgeon in endoscopic procedures. The patient had satisfactory results at three months follow up and showed no symptoms or relapse on CT scans of orbital region. Introduction The under-five age group is crucial because the health profile of this age group will have a huge effect on the future development of the nation. Early infancy is marked by several distinct developmental characteristics. Progress in each domain of childhood development is used to track a child's development. Objectives The objectives of the present study were to assess and compare the growth of under-five children of employed and unemployed mothers in the Etawah District of Uttar Pradesh, India. Material and methods A community-based cross-sectional survey was carried out in Etawah district's urban and rural areas between January 2021 and June 2022. A total of 200 mothers with children under the age of five were recruited using the purposive sampling method. To gather pertinent information, a semi-structured, pre-tested, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used. Results In the present study on the comparison of the growth of children among employed and unemployed mothers, it shows that 48 children (50.5%) with a weight between 10.5 and 15 kg were of employed mothers, while 52 children weighing less than 10.5kg were of unemployed mothers (p<0.001). Forty-four children (57.1%) with a chest circumference of more than 48 cm were of employed mothers, while 26 children (78.8%) with a chest circumference of less than 45 cm were of unemployed mothers (p = 0.001). Conclusion The present study indicates that statistically significant differences were found in age-appropriate gain in weight and chest circumference, which was higher among the children of employed mothers in comparison to children of unemployed mothers. There was no statistically significant difference in age-appropriate gain in height, head circumference, or mid-upper arm circumference among the children of employed mothers and unemployed mothers.

The current work reports the gum arabic-mediated greener synthesis of MoS2 nanoparticles (NPs) and its utilization for the solar light-assisted degradation of methylene blue. Furthermore, the safety analyses were performed on human-beneficial gut bacterium, L. delbrueckii, and human blood cells to confirm the biocompatibility of NPs synthesized. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were done to explore their usefulness for biological applications. Sonication and microwave treatment were used to obtain spherical 10-12 nm MoS2 NPs as characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. FT-IR characterization revealed the occurrence of gum arabic on the NPs surface. The MoS2 NPs exhibited ~ 98% MB degradation within 8 h under direct sunlight exposure. Moreover, the reusability studies have also been evaluated and free radical trapping experiments indicated that superoxide (•O2-) is the dominant active species of the reaction system. Furthermore, 98.89% MB degradation efficiency was observed within 150 min in the case of real textile industry MB effluent samples. Untreated MB inhibited the growth of L. delbrueckii on MRS agar plates, while growth was observed in the case of MoS2 NPs-treated MB samples indicating safety of current MB degradation approach. MoS2 NPs inhibited the growth of E. coli MTCC1698 and S. aureus MTCC 3160 with 26 mm and 21 mm zone of inhibition, respectively. Furthermore, MoS2 NPs have shown antioxidant properties, resulting in 82.3 ± 0.43% of DPPH scavenging activity which was comparable to ascorbic acid (81.6 ± 0.6%), a standard antioxidant molecule. The NPs have not shown any hemolytic activity at 0.0625 and 0.125 mg/mL doses to human blood proving their biocompatible nature. Gum arabic-synthesized biocompatible MoS2 NPs have good potential to treat MB released as waste from the textile industry and other biological applications.

ABSTRACT

Pharyngolaryngoesophageal (PLO) reconstruction is a complex and technically demanding procedure. The reconstructive surgeon's concerns include avoiding fistula and stricture formation, as well as restoring normal speech and swallowing. A retrospective observational study with circumferential pharyngo-laryngo-oesophagal defects with aims and objectives of evaluation and comparison of the long-term functional outcomes like speech and swallowing along with the complications of fistula and stricture in two groups of JFF and FC flaps from the data is collected from electronic medical records of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, from January 2011 to May 2020. A total of 67 patients (52 JFF and 15 fasciocutaneous flaps) were operated on in last 9 years in our institute. The difference in fistula rates and stricture rates between the two groups was not significant (p= 0.98 and 0.947). The difference in 100% oral diet between the two groups was significant (p= 0.019). The difference in speech rehabilitation between the two groups was significant (p= 0.024). The intestinal tubes and fasciocutaneous tubes have comparable outcomes with regard to fistula and stricture formation. Speech outcomes in the form of the ability to have functional speech and voice quality were significantly better with skin-lined tubes. Swallowing outcomes were much better with intestinal tubes, along with early oral alimentation.

ABSTRACT

It is becoming more widely recognised that free-ranging dogs, which have a nearly global distribution, threatening native wildlife. Their increasing population and spread to new areas is of growing concern for the long-term viability of wildlife species. Hence, it is imperative to understand the factors responsible for their infestation and map areas where native species are most vulnerable. Using the random forests algorithm, we modelled the free-ranging dog infestation in the Trans-Himalayan region to pinpoint the high-risk areas where free-ranging dogs are threatening the native wildlife species. We found that the likelihood of free-ranging dog occurrence is most in valley regions and up to 4000 m, often in proximity to roads. Our results also indicated that free-ranging dog prefers areas with wildlife near to protected areas. The predictor variables, such as potential evapotranspiration of the coldest quarter, distance to protected areas, elevation, distance to roads, and potential evapotranspiration of the driest quarter, significantly influence the distribution of the free-ranging dogs. We found that within the Ladakh region of the Trans-Himalayan area, the high-risk zones for free-ranging dogs are located in and around Hemis National Park, Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary, and Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. While, in the Lahaul and Spiti region the high-risk areas encompass Pin Valley National Park, Inderkilla National Park, Khirganga National Park, Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary, and several other protected areas. We identified the potentially high-risk areas for implementing strategies to mitigate the possible impact of free-ranging dogs on native wildlife of the Himalayas. Hence, the identified high priority areas can be used for implementing actions for controlling the population growth and further preventing the infestation of the free-ranging dogs into the new areas.
